Self-esteem is connected to a person’s confidence, their perception of their worth for respect, and value as an individual. Thus, it is a reflection of a person’s opinion about themselves. Healthy self-esteem reflects a healthy assessment of one’s capabilities and limitations and accepts them. This is not similar to having inflated self-esteem, where one’s opinion of oneself is not reflective of reality, nor is it similar to low self-esteem, where one constantly feels self-doubt, shame, and undermines their abilities and potentials. Having too high and too low self-esteem can affect a person’s growth and ability to establish and maintain relationships.
The goal of self-esteem counseling is to change individuals’ opinions of themselves. The counselor will guide their clients into having a more realistic sense of self and support them in focusing on positive outcomes.
